Peter Barrett, Ph.D., Chairman
Dr. Barrett currently serves as partner in the life sciences group at Atlas Venture. Previously, he was a co-founder, executive vice president and chief business officer of Celera Genomics, which announced the first successful sequencing of the human genome just 2 years after its founding in 1998. Dr. Barrett was instrumental in the launch of Celera as a publicly traded entity in 1999, and went on to lead the Celera’s acquisition of Axys Pharmaceuticals. Prior to Celera, Dr. Barrett held senior management positions at The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, most recently serving as vice president, corporate planning and business development. Dr. Barrett is currently vice chairman of the advisory council of the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis at Northeastern University, as well as adjunct professor at the Barnett Institute. He also serves as president of the Autism Consortium, a non-profit institution. Dr. Barrett received his B.S. in chemistry from Lowell Technological Institute (now known as the University of Massachusetts, Lowell) and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Northeastern University, in addition to completing Harvard Business School's management development program.
Thomas E. Hughes, Ph.D.
Dr. Hughes joined Zafgen in 2008 as chief executive officer. Throughout his career, Dr. Hughes has been involved in numerous drug discovery efforts in the metabolic and cardiovascular disease area, focusing on glucose homeostasis, lipid metabolism and the control of blood clotting. During his 20-year tenure at Novartis, Dr. Hughes most recently served as the vice president and global head of the cardiovascular and metabolism disease area. Prior to this position, he served as the the site head for research at Novartis’ research facility in Basel, Switzerland. He also served as global head of diabetes research at Novartis where he directed drug discovery research teams specializing in type 2 diabetes and metabolic disorders. From 1995 to 2001, Dr. Hughes led discovery efforts at Novartis that resulted in the validation of DPP-4 inhibition as a therapeutic approach to type 2 diabetes, as well as the identification and advancement of vildagliptin. In 2007, R&D Directions magazine named Dr. Hughes one of the 20 Most Notable People in R&D. Dr. Hughes earned his Ph.D. in Nutrition from Tufts University and received an M.S. in zoology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University. He graduated with a B.A. in biology from Franklin and Marshall College.
Bruce Booth, Ph.D.
Dr. Booth joined Atlas Venture in 2005, and currently serves as partner in the life sciences group, focusing on new and emerging companies developing novel biotech or pharmaceutical products, therapeutic platforms and innovative biomedical technologies. Previously, Dr. Booth was a principal at Caxton Health Holdings L.L.C., a healthcare-focused investment firm, where he focused on the firm’s private equity activities, ranging from early stage venture capital through late stage buyouts. Prior to Caxton, he was an associate principal at McKinsey & Company, a global strategic management consulting firm, where he advised clients on R&D productivity, corporate strategy and business development issues across the biopharmaceutical sector. Dr. Booth currently serves as a trustee of the New York Academy of Medicine, and is a term member of the council on foreign relations. As a British Marshall Scholar, Dr. Booth earned his Ph.D. in molecular immunology from the Oxford University's Nuffield department of medicine. He received his B.S. in biochemistry from the Pennsylvania State University.
Avi Goldberg
As co-founder and chief operating officer at GreatPoint Energy, Mr. Goldberg is responsible for managing all business development, legal, financial and operational planning functions for the company. Previously, Mr. Goldberg co-founded Coatue Corporation, a microelectronics company developing novel polymer materials for use in the semiconductor industry. As the chief operating officer and member of the board of directors, he was instrumental in assembling the executive team, securing venture and debt financing, and negotiating the purchase of the company in June 2003 by Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD). From 1998 through 2000, Mr. Goldberg served as director of worldwide sales and profit optimization for Cignal Global Communications, a pioneer in voice over data network communications, where he managed global sales and cost containment for Cignal’s core business units, generating over $50 million a year in revenue. Mr. Goldberg graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a B.A. in political science and strategic intelligence.
Liam Ratcliffe, M.D., Ph.D.
Liam Ratcliffe is a venture partner at New Leaf Venture Partners, based in New York City. He is an independent director on the Zafgen board. Liam most recently served as senior vice president and development head for Pfizer Neuroscience, as well as worldwide head of clinical research and development. Additional positions at Pfizer included vice president of exploratory development for the midwest region, and head of experimental medicine at Pfizer’s Sandwich, UK Laboratories. As head of neurosciences, Liam was responsible for the development of several successful late-stage projects and marketed products, including PD 332, 334, Lyrica, Chantix and Geodon. In previous roles, he gained extensive experience in early drug development and translational research across multiple therapeutic areas, including inflammation, pain, cardiovascular disease, infectious diseases and genito-urinary medicine. Liam began his career in the pharmaceutical industry in a medical marketing role at Roche in South Africa. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in immunology from the University of Cape Town and his MBA degree from the University of Michigan. He completed his internal medicine training and fellowship in Immunology at Groote Schuur Hospital and additional teaching hospitals in Cape Town, South Africa.
Kevin Starr
Mr. Starr serves as partner at Third Rock Ventures, a venture capital fund whose passion is the creation and building of valuable and transformational life science companies that show high growth potential and are well-positioned to make a difference in the marketplace. Mr. Starr has more than 20 years of experience in management of finance, technology and operations in biotech. As chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Millennium, Mr. Starr led the business teams responsible for raising several billion dollars through partnerships and equity offerings. Mr. Starr has held leadership positions at Biogen, and he serves on the board of directors for several leading biotech companies.
Lou Tartaglia, Ph.D.
Dr. Tartaglia serves as partner at Third Rock Ventures, a venture capital fund dedicated to building transformational life science companies. Dr. Tartaglia is a recognized thought leader in the field of obesity and has authored more than 50 scientific publications. Prior to joining Third Rock Ventures, Dr. Tartaglia was senior vice president and general manager at Gene Logic, a business unit he founded at Millennium when he was vice president of new ventures, in addition to serving as vice president of metabolic diseases.
